Brian MAXSON

Brian Jeffrey Maxson is Associate Professor of History and Assistant Dean at East Tennessee State University. He obtained his doctorate from Northwestern University in 2008. A renowned specialist of Italian humanism, he published his first book, The Humanist World of Renaissance Florence, in 2013. After Civic Humanism, written in collaboration with Nicholas Scott Baker, is his second book collecting essays that explore new ways of considering the relation between politics and culture beyond the usual paradigm of “civic humanism.”  He has also published widely on the politics, diplomacy, and culture of the Italian Renaissance (The Journal of Medieval History, I Tatti Studies in the Italian Renaissance, Archivio Storico Italiano, Renaissance Studies, etc.). He has received numerous research grants: Villa I Tatti in Florence, Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Tennessee, the Fulbright Foundation, and the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Foundation.
